The State of 21st Century Acupuncture in the United States

Presenters: Clasina (Sina) Leslie Smith, MS, MA, LAc, MD; Rosa Schnyer, DAOM; Jennifer Stone, MSOM; Lixing Lao, PhD; Lisa Conboy, MA, MS, ScD; and Korina St. John, DACM, MS, LAc (NCCAOM)

Approximately 5 years ago, the leadership at ASA and SAR created a task force charged with creating a reference paper on the state of acupuncture in the US. They asked that this be a document suitable for researchers, policy makers, and other persons in positions of leadership to reference about Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine.

The task force has worked diligently over many years (over 30 drafts and 200+ references) to create the substantive document that was published open access in Journal of Pain Research in October 2024.

This workshop will discuss the process and outcomes of the paper, describe for the audience how the material included and excluded was decided upon, explore the conversations about naming conventions and other issues that determined the final contents, discuss how the paper can be used by acupuncturists, researchers and other thought leaders, and create dialogue with the audience about the contents of the paper.
